Mid-Wales Housing Association recently evicted a nightmare tenant who lived on the Trehafren estate in Newtown on grounds of anti-social behaviour, allowing the remainder of its tenants on the estate to return to a peaceful life once again.

Mid-Wales Housing Association, the only locally-based housing association in Newtown, is taking a tough line on tenants who prove to be a nightmare to their neighbours. The Association feels strongly that its tenants have the right to quiet enjoyment of their homes and takes a very serious view of those few tenants who are inconsiderate.

The Association was pleased that Welshpool County Court agreed to evict the tenant who was causing severe noise nuisance throughout the day and night as well as vandalising his and neighbouring properties and being abusive and threatening to neighbours on the estate shortly after moving in. Over the short duration of the tenancy, of less than one year, the Association received numerous complaints from neighbouring tenants about the noise levels and the attitude of the tenant. The Housing Services Manager of Mid-Wales Housing said "Every effort was made to give the tenant the opportunity to remain on the estate including offers of alternative suitable accommodation, but despite our best efforts and  a great deal of support being provided the tenant continued to be a nuisance to neighbouring tenants".

Fortunately, evicting a tenant is not something that Mid-Wales Housing Association is faced with on a regular basis and most tenants take pride in their homes. Shane Perkins, Chief Executive of Mid-Wales Housing Association said: "The majority of homes that Mid-Wales Housing provides are great places in which to live, and our tenants have a great sense of neighbourhood and pride in their homes, so we will not tolerate any tenant who threatens the quality of lives of others in this way."

Mid-Wales Housing is working hard to successfully prevent and resolve cases of anti-social behaviour and recognises the importance of working in partnership with other statutory and voluntary agencies, including the Police. The emphasis to tackle anti-social behaviour by the Association will become ever more important should police numbers be cut in future.
